Ambthuiswal is a street in the historic centre of Bredevoort. It begins as a side street off Landstraat, crosses Gasthuisstraat and Pater Jan de Vriesstraat, and ends at Hozenstraat.
The name refers to the former Ambthuis, which once stood here, and to the street’s position along Bredevoort’s old town rampart. The rampart ran parallel to the street, from the former Misterpoort to a defensive tower at the point where Ambthuiswal continued into Gasthuisstraat.
After the fortifications were dismantled in the 18th and 19th centuries, the streetscape changed considerably. Bastion Stoltenborg was levelled and the moat filled in, creating space for new buildings and a reorganisation of the public realm. Ambthuiswal therefore remains a reminder of Bredevoort’s defensive past.
