Haartsestraat, Aalten

The present-day Haartsestraat was formerly called Gasthuisstraat, after the poorhouse / almshouse of the Dutch Reformed diaconate, which stood here until 1904, roughly opposite café Schiller.

In the photograph below on the left, we see Haartsestraat around 1900. At the front left, part of the Stiemenshuus. On the right, beyond the mayor’s residence – later the post office – we can see the poorhouse. At the very back, we can just make out the Luutenshuus.
