Vismarkt is a street and small square in Bredevoort’s old centre. It branches off Landstraat and today splits in two directions. One branch leads to the Molenwal and then ends as a road, although a footpath still provides access to the town rampart. The other branch leads into ‘t Walletje, a small street that once ran parallel to the curtain rampart here.
The square is now so small that there would barely be room for a single fishmonger. It must once have been larger, as can be seen on old maps of Bredevoort. The Bredevoort Synagogue also stood here and remained in use until the First World War; the building was converted into a house in 1920.
There is also a pump on Vismarkt, formerly known as Broeckhuijsens Putte bij de Rosmolen. Directly in front of the pump, the complete foundations of the former horse mill still lie beneath the ground. Vismarkt was Bredevoort’s third market. The town once also had a Ganzenmarkt, between Hozenstraat and Gasthuisstraat. As for Vismarkt itself, it was indeed used as a fish market in the past.
