Overzicht
Barend Johannis (Bernard) Manschot werd op 17 augustus 1850 geboren in de Prinsenstraat te Aalten, zoon van Gerrit Willem Manschot (grofsmid) en Johanna Geertruid Becking). Bernard trouwde op 18 juli 1878 in Utrecht met Maria Harting (Breda, 4 december 1848). Uit dit huwelijk werden een zoon en een dochter geboren.
In 1871 stichtten Bernard Manschot en zijn zwager Abraham (Bram) ten Dam een kammenfabriek aan de Damstraat in Aalten. Bernard en Bram woonden tegenover elkaar aan de Bredevoortsestraatweg, Bernard in de witte villa op nummer 51 en Bram er tegenover, in het huis waar nu Fysiotherapie van Panhuis is gevestigd.
Bernard Manschot passed away on 27 June 1920, at the age of 69.
Funeral
Woensdagmiddag werd het stoffelijk overschot van den heer B. J. Manschot grafwaarts gedragen. Toen de kist was neergelaten, sprak de heer Slicher van Bath een kort woord van afscheid en van dank. Gij geniet thans de rust – aldus spr. – die gij welverdiend hebt. Toch hadden we zoo gaarne u nog wat in ons midden gehouden, waar gij in al uw daden door zoo edele beginselen werd gedreven.
We have learned much from your wisdom and benefited from the goodness of your heart. We shall have to miss all of this now. But we will not forget you. The spiritual seeds you have sown will remain within us, and we shall endeavour to follow your example in all the noble and grand things you have done.
We have not come here to proclaim your praises. You would not wish to accept them here. You were too humble for that. However, we must not forget to express our gratitude for what you have done for the Departement tot nut van ’t algemeen (Society for the Public Good). For more than 30 years, you served as its secretary, devoting your utmost strength and devotion to this institution.
Meer dan 30 jaren had gij de leiding van de bewaarschool. Door uw toewijding is zij geworden wat zij thans is. Noode zuilen wij u ook daar missen. Wij willen evenwel niet versagen, doch in uw voetstappen blijven wandelen en hopen dat te doen met uw levensleus: Excelsior, excelsior!
Once again, our heartfelt thanks on behalf of the Department, also on behalf of the children of the nursery school who have now grown into adulthood, and on behalf of the parents of the children for all the kindness you have shown. We would no longer wish to be without the institution founded by you. Sleep peacefully!”
Visibly moved, Mr Ten Dam then thanked everyone, also on behalf of his niece, including the workmen who had paid their final respects to the unforgettable deceased.
