Work on rerouting the Slinge and building the new bridge near Richterinkstraat is now making good progress. The bridge abutment on the Aalten side has already been completed, while on the other side the sheet piling has already been jetted into place. The rainfall of recent days has made the work somewhat more difficult, but with the help of two motor pumps most of the water has been removed, allowing work to continue.
The map above shows what the situation will look like once the work has been completed. Willemstraat is being widened and extended across the new bridge. Just before the bridge, a new street is being laid out as far as the new channel of the stream. A footbridge will cross the stream here, providing access to Kemena, while the street itself bends to the left and follows the stream upstream.
In the photograph, the bridge builders can be seen in the foreground jetting the sheet piling into place for the left-hand abutment. On the far side of the stream, labourers working under the supervision of the Heidemaatschappij are removing the final obstacles from the new course of the Slinge. Only a narrow embankment about a metre wide still keeps the water out of its new channel.
On Thursday evening this last embankment was dug away as well, and by this morning the water below the bridge under construction was already following its new course. The old channel is already being filled in, and the water is gradually being diverted from its former bed.
Needless to say, the work is attracting plenty of spectators, so the industrious labourers certainly cannot complain of a lack of supervision.
