Overview
The late-medieval Merfelt Cellar belonged to a borgmanhuis, a house occupied by a castle retainer, where Adolf van Merfelt, a borgman of Bredevoort, once lived. The cellar is both rare and old. Its vaulting is highly unusual for a private dwelling: four cross vaults supported by a central column.
In 2014, the Merfelt Cellar was nominated for the Heritage Prize of the municipality of Aalten. The nomination recognised the care and respect for the historic character, as well as the choice of materials, with which the restoration was carried out.
The restoration work was carried out over several years. Its high point was the repair of the vaults, securing the long-term stability of the cross vaulting.
