Landstraat is Bredevoort’s oldest street and crosses the town from west to east, where it continues as Misterstraat. Originally, Landstraat was an old long-distance road (heerweg) running through marshland. The higher ground within the marsh was a logical place to levy tolls, and this marked the beginning of Bredevoort itself. Bredevoort Castle was founded on this rise to control toll collection at the crossing.
Landstraat begins at the ravelin where Tramstraat and Bolwerkweg end. Within the old centre it has several side streets. From the Aalterpoort eastwards these include Prinsenstraat and Kerkstraat, followed by Koppelstraat and Markt. The street then passes Vismarkt and Fekkengeste, before continuing past Ambthuiswal and Molenwal. Before 1610, Molenwal was a street running along the town wall. After the earthen ramparts were constructed, it became a ramp leading up to Bastion Welgemoed. The surviving Molenwal is now a side street off Landstraat.
Landstraat ends before the Munsterbrug, where the Misterpoort once stood. From the Slingebeek onwards, the road is called Misterstraat.
