Aan het einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog, op Goede Vrijdag 30 maart 1945 werd Aalten bevrijd door Britse troepen. Deze bevrijding maakte deel uit van de grootschalige geallieerde opmars door Oost-Nederland, direct na de oversteek van de Rijn tijdens Operation Plunder. De bevrijders behoorden tot de 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards en het 3rd Battalion Irish Guards, beide onderdeel van de 32nd Guards Brigade binnen de Guards Armoured Division van het Britse leger.1

Opmars naar Aalten

Eind maart 1945 trokken de Guards vanuit Duitsland de Achterhoek binnen. De Grenadier Guards vormden de voorhoede en rukten op langs de Bocholtsestraatweg richting Aalten en daarna verder naar Enschede, met de Irish Guards als gemechaniseerde infanterie in hun kielzog.2 De opmars werd bemoeilijkt door verwoeste bruggen, mijnenvelden en felle tegenstand van terugtrekkende Duitse eenheden.

De King’s Company van de Grenadier Guards kreeg de opdracht om via de zogeheten ‘centre line’ richting het centrum van Aalten op te rukken. Echter, belangrijke bruggen bleken door de Duitsers te zijn opgeblazen. De brug aan de Bodendijk was deels nog intact en majoor Baker, commandant van de King’s Company, leidde zijn mannen hier overheen.3

Bij de spoorlijn aangekomen stuitten de mannen op hevig verzet en werden ze bestookt met mortiervuur en granaten. Het gevecht met de vijand had rampzalige gevolgen voor de bevrijders: meerdere soldaten kwamen om, onder wie pelotonscommandant Andrew Duncan.4

Omstreeks middernacht sneuvelden nog eens twee soldaten van de Irish Guards doordat hun voertuig op een mijn reed in de toenmalige Dijkstraat (nu Plein Zuid). De explosie leidde tot een felle brand waarbij het oude café Vultink volledig afbrandde. De volgende dag, 31 maart 1945 kwamen twee genisten van de Royal Engineers om tijdens het ruimen van mijnen.5

Verliezen en begraafplaats

Van de in totaal 13 omgekomen Britse soldaten, liggen er 12 begraven op de algemene begraafplaats Berkenhove in Aalten. Pelotonscommandant Andrew Duncan ligt begraven op het Reichswald Forest War Cemetery bij Kleve. Dankzij historisch onderzoek zijn inmiddels van twaalf van deze soldaten ook foto’s teruggevonden. Daarmee hebben de bevrijders letterlijk een gezicht gekregen.6

Na de bevrijding

Meteen na de bevrijding verscheen de Aaltensche Courant weer. Kort na de bevrijding op 4 april vonden drie jongens, de achtjarige Wim Schenk, zijn zesjarig broertje Henk en de vijfjarige Wim Wisselink in een droge sloot aan de Bocholtsestraatweg een projectiel. Zij besloten het projectiel te testen en gooiden het tegen de muur van een huis. De drie kinderen vonden de dood.7

Ter ere van de inzet van de King’s Company werd de brug over de Keizersbeek vernoemd tot de King’s Company Brug. De ceremonie vond plaats op 5 mei 2008 en werd bijgewoond door onder andere veteraan Walter Price, die in 1945 daadwerkelijk diende in deze eenheid.8
