Urnfield in Barlo

In 1959, remains of an urnfield from the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age were discovered on a site near the De Kamp farm on the Lichtenvoordsestraatweg in Barlo. The urnfield was designated a national monument in 2003.

The Arnhemsche Courant reported on 11 March 1959:

“Yesterday, during excavation work at the farm of farmer A.J. te Paske, De Kamp in Barloo, municipality of Aalten, a number of urns were found. During the morning hours, the first urn was discovered at a depth of approximately 40 to 50 centimetres; it was still virtually undamaged and contained skeletal remains.

Mayor E.S. van Veen was immediately informed of this find, after which municipal workers continued with the excavation. Over the course of the day, four more urns were uncovered in an area of a few square metres. A few years ago, urns had already been found about a hundred metres from this site.”
