Het pand Kerkstraat 2 is gesitueerd op een perceel direct ten zuiden van de Oude Helenakerk en dateert van omstreeks 1920. Het gebouw bepaalt met zijn statige hoge vierkante bouwmassa voor een belangrijk deel het beeld in dit gedeelte van de Kerkstraat.

Opvallend is het souterrain met de dubbele bedrijfsdeuren in de voorgevel. Het verstoorde metselwerk op deze plaats in de voorgevel geeft aan dat dit mogelijk een latere wijziging is. De invullingen van de vensters op de verdiepingen zijn grotendeels vernieuwd. Dit doet echter geen afbreuk aan de markante en statige uitstraling van het gebouw dat een soort „landhoofd‟ vormt aan deze zijde van de Kerkstraat.

Ooit woonde op deze plek Eppink, koster van de hervormde kerk. Hij werd ‘Eppink van de trepkes’ genoemd, omdat zijn woonhuis alleen via een stenen trap was te bereiken.

In 1887 bakte Eppink pannenkoeken voor vijftig soldaten en vijftien huzaren, die op wacht stonden rond het kerkgebouw. Het eigendomsrecht van het kerkgebouw stond ter discussie. De soldaten stonden op wacht, nadat in een telegram van 10 maart 1887 aan de Commissaris van de Koning was gemeld dat de toestand zeer gespannen was en dat vijfhonderd boeren zich een weg naar de preekstoel zouden banen.
