De sigarenwinkel van Dick Fries (1924-2002) en zijn vrouw Leis (1931-2004) aan de Landstraat was een begrip in Aalten. De winkel lag centraal en het echtpaar was nauw betrokken bij het wel en wee van het dorp. Velen kwamen er om rookwaren te kopen, maar ook voor een praatje. Jarenlang organiseerden Dirk en Leis Fries rookwedstrijden, waarbij het er om ging wie de langste askegel rookte. Prins Bernhard ontving jaarlijks op zijn verjaardag een doos goede sigaren. Daarom kreeg de winkel het predikaat ‘hofleverancier van Zijne Koninklijke Hoogheid Prins Bernhard’.

Zoals in vele middenstandsgezinnen bepaalde de winkel het ritme van de dag en de week. De zaak was zes dagen in de week en op koopavonden geopend. Ook buiten de officiële openingstijden kon een klant bij Fries terecht. ’s Avonds werd de administratie gedaan.

Gedurende het 65-jarig bestaan van de sigarenwinkel was er in de inrichting en het assortiment vrijwel niets veranderd. Dit kwam omdat Dick Fries blind was. Omdat alles op dezelfde plek bleef, kon hij de weg goed vinden. Zijn visuele handicap belette hem niet om in de jaren zestig nog een kruidenierswinkel en een restaurant aan de Duitse grens te openen. Deze zaken, waarin familieleden werkten, werden na een aantal jaren weer afgestoten. Tot kort voor zijn overlijden stond Dick Fries in zijn sigarenwinkel. De zaak bleef nog bestaan tot 2004.

Na de sluiting werd het originele interieur verplaatst naar het Nederlands Openluchtmuseum in Arnhem.
