In de oude dorpsboerderij Markt 9 was begin vorige eeuw de kruidenierswinkel van Walvoort gevestigd. Aan de Landstraatzijde van het huis stond in een balk boven de grote deuren “OCH GODT LAT DIR BEVOLEN SYN DIT HUIS UND DIE DAER WOENEN IN. DEN 30 AUGUSTI”. Voor een jaartal was geen ruimte meer.

In 1925 werd het pand door de gemeente aangekocht en verbouwd om de brandweerauto’s onder te brengen. De voorgevel werd daarvoor uitgebroken.

In 1975 werd de oude brandweerkazerne gesloopt om plaats te maken voor een uitbreiding van het gemeentehuis. Veel Aaltenaren vonden de moderne nieuwbouw ontsierend aan het historische plein. In 2016 en 2017 werd het gemeentehuis gerenoveerd, waarbij de aanbouw uit de jaren 70 werd gesloopt en vervangen door historiserende nieuwbouw.
