Later werd er een winkel in manufacturen gevestigd. In 1985 werd het pand vervangen door een nieuw gebouw, dat aanvankelijk als postkantoor diende en tegenwoordig een winkelfunctie heeft.

De winkel van Breekveldt

In 1914 kocht J.G. Breekveldt het pand dat er destijds stond en vestigde er zijn winkel in manufacturen, textiel en werkkleding. Een huishoudster die enige tijd voor de familie Breekveldt werkte, herinnerde zich hoe mevrouw Breekveldt haar gasten doordeweeks trakteerde op eenvoudige biscuits. Voor de zondag was er een speciale koektrommel met luxere koeken. Toen de huishoudster op een doordeweekse dag de visite zondagse koeken serveerde, kreeg ze daar de nodige opmerkingen over.

Een andere anecdote vertelt hoe Henk ter Maat met zijn vader (‘Gruus Willem’) kolen ging bezorgen bij de familie Breekveldt. Ze moesten vanaf de Peperstraat dwars door de winkel, met een zak kolen op de rug, naar de kelder waar zich het kolenhok bevond. De gewelfde kelder was niet al te hoog. Henk was vrij lang en liep zich vast tussen trap en gewelf. Door de knieën en voorover gebogen probeerde hij in de kelder te komen. De zakken met kolen waren open en door de diepe buiging rolden deze over zijn schouder de kelder in. Mevrouw Breekveldt (Neeltje, geen Aaltense) zag het en riep: “Nou zeg, ga me ze hier neergooien!” Ze was een precieze dame en dan dat zwarte goedje maar zo laten rollen? Henk en zijn vader ruimden het op en maakten alles schoon. Met de volgende zakken ging Henk achterwaarts de trap af, en met wat gewurm lukte het hem de kelder in te komen.

In 1962 stond het pand van Breekveldt leeg en mochten de nozems er tijdelijk hun toevlucht nemen om van de straat af te zijn. Rond 1975 werd het pand gesloopt om plaats te maken voor een parkeerplaats.

Postkantoor

In 1985 begon men op deze locatie met de bouw van een nieuw postkantoor, ter vervanging van het oude kantoor aan de Haartsestraat, dat 63 jaar had dienstgedaan. Het ontwerp kwam van het architectenbureau Brouwer en Deurvorst uit Oosterbeek. Na een bouwperiode van tien maanden werd het nieuwe postkantoor op 26 juni 1986 officieel geopend.

Het nieuwe postkantoor werd geprezen om zijn moderne ontwerp dat goed aansloot bij de omgeving. De directeur van het hoofdpostkantoor in Winterswijk, T. Philips, roemde de comfortabele en eigentijdse inrichting, die de dienstverlening aanzienlijk verbeterde. Het kantoor beschikte over drie loketten, een 24-uurs zelfbedieningsruimte en een speciaal loket voor het afgeven van grote hoeveelheden post. Ook bood het kantoor faxpost aan, destijds een nieuwe en moderne service.

Burgemeester Bekius had de eer om de eerste bezoeker te zijn. Uit handen van besteller Gerrit Stronks ontving hij een fax met kennisgeving van aankomst van een pakje. Met de bijgevoegde sleutel opende Bekius de toegangsdeur, waarna met de overhandiging van het aangekondigde poststuk, een miniatuurposttruck, de opening van het postkantoor een feit was.

Shop-in-Shop

Het pand heeft sindsdien opnieuw van functie gewisseld en is nu de thuisbasis van Carrousel Shop-in-Shop.
