Tegenwoordig buigt de Slingebeek voorbij Beekhuize in zijn geheel af naar het westen. Vroeger stroomde veel water echter door een sloot rechtdoor richting Aalten-Zuid. Daar was het land laag, er waren veel poelen en sloten. Een van de poelen heette “Het kikvorschengat” en een boerderij daar dichtbij, waar nu ongeveer de fietsenzaak van Wisselink, Plein Zuid 1 staat, heette “De Kikvorsch“. Een deel van het water van de Slinge stroomde daarlangs om zo, via de “Aa-beken” zoals ze wel werden genoemd, te worden afgevoerd in de richting van Breedenbroek en Gendringen.
