De geschiedenis van De Domme Aanleg gaat terug tot 1868, toen op deze plek een boerderijtje werd gebouwd op een perceel dat tot die tijd uit heide bestond. Hier vestigde zich de familie Te Sligte: vader Hendrik Willem was landbouwer en kleermaker, terwijl zijn zoon Hendrik Jan eind 19e eeuw werd vermeld als landbouwer en herbergier. De eerste vermelding van de naam ‘Dommen Aanleg’ vonden we in een krantenbericht uit 1879 in de Zutphense Courant.

Volgens overlevering was Hendrik Jan, naast landbouwer, aanvankelijk melkboer. Hij stond bekend als verstrooid; het verhaal gaat dat hij zich regelmatig vergiste in het wisselen van haver en gortepap. Toen hij vanwege scheurbuik zijn werk als melkboer moest opgeven, besloot hij borreltjes te gaan verkopen aan voorbijgangers.

Mede dankzij de strategische ligging werd het café van Te Sligte al snel een welkome rustplaats voor reizigers die, te voet of per paard en wagen, over de hobbelige zandwegen trokken. Zij legden hier graag even aan ‘bi-j den dommen’ om te ontspannen en van een borreltje te genieten.

In 1913 werd de zaak officieel ingeschreven bij de Kamer van Koophandel, en onder leiding van Te Sligte en zijn opvolgers groeide de bescheiden uitspanning uit tot een gerespecteerde herberg, waar men niet alleen kon overnachten en een eenvoudige maaltijd kon nuttigen, maar ook kon genieten van een drankje onder de kastanjebomen. De eerste danslessen van dansstudio Vieberink werden hier zelfs gegeven.

In de eerste helft van de 20e eeuw liep de tramlijn Lichtenvoorde-Bocholt langs De Domme Aanleg, waar zich ook een halte bevond.

Vandaag de dag wordt De Domme Aanleg gerund door Gerbert en Heidi Smit, die de traditie van gastvrijheid en gezelligheid met enthousiasme voortzetten.
