Naast zijn werk als bakker was hij kassier van de Coöperatieve Raiffeisenbank (Boerenleenbank), gevestigd aan de Landstraat 5a, maar het grootste deel van de werkzaamheden liet hij daar over aan Jan Elferink, plaatsvervangend kassier en de latere directeur van de Raiffeisenbank.

De bouw van Markt 8

In 1963-1964 liet de Coöperatieve Raiffeisenbank in Bredevoort een nieuw, vrijstaand pand bouwen aan de Markt 8, middenin de kern van het oude Bredevoort. Het nieuwe pand kreeg op de begane grond een kantoorruimte met wachtkamer. Op de verdieping kwamen een vergaderzaal en archiefruimtes. In 1964 verhuisde de Boerenleenbank naar dit pand, dat later de Rabobank werd.

Architectuurstijl

Het gebouw werd ontworpen door architect B. Blekkink uit Aalten in een mengstijl van de Delftse School en het modernisme, ook wel bekend als ‘shake-hands’-architectuur. Kenmerkend voor het pand zijn de traditionalistische elementen, zoals de gevels van handvormsteen en het pannengedekte schilddak. Tegelijkertijd tonen de vensterlijsten en stalen ramen een duidelijke invloed van de modernistische architectuur.

Opmerkelijk is dat het pand in zowel de hoofdvorm als de detaillering vrijwel volledig intact is gebleven. Door zijn ontwerp en harmonieuze vormgeving voegt het gebouw zich naadloos in de historische omgeving van Bredevoort. Het pand is van groot beeldbepalend belang voor dit deel van de Markt.

De sluiting van de Rabobank

Vanaf 2013 functioneerde het gebouw niet langer als bankfiliaal. Het personeel werd overgeplaatst en de pinautomaat werd verwijderd. Met name het verdwijnen van deze automaat hield de gemoederen in het stadje destijds flink bezig. Ondanks een protestdemonstratie van de Bredevoortse bevolking, waarbij men in optocht ging ‘pinnen’ bij de Rabobank in Aalten, werd de automaat op 17 december 2013 definitief gesloten.
