Jan ten Dam, in 1742 getrouwd met Anna Catharina Evers, kocht het oude Evershuis aan de Kerkstraat. De volgende eigenaar was hun zoon, de leerlooier Harmen Jan sr., geboren 1744, die zijn leerlooierij had aan de zuidzijde van de Slingebeek, tussen Dijksbrug en Koembrug. Deze kreeg in 1811 op zijn oude dag ruzie met een buurvrouw, die hem door een verbouwing het uitzicht ontnam. Er volgde een rechtszaak. Zijn zoon Derk Willem (1771-1813) had ook een leerlooierij aan de Slingebeek, in de buurt van de Stationsstraat tegenover de oude ‘botterfabriek‘.

Derk Willems’ zoon Harmen Jan jr. erfde het huis aan de Kerkstraat, werd vroeg wees en ging als pleegkind in de leer bij goud- en zilversmid G.A. Manschot in Aalten. Hij nam de leerlooierij dus niet over. Tijdens de oorlogen was er veel vraag naar leer voor het leger geweest, maar rond 1817 had het leerlooien zijn beste tijd gehad. In 1827 trok Harmen Jan naar Kampen als leerling goud- en zilversmid. Daar leerde hij Petronella Johanna Gerber kennen, afstammelinge van gevluchte Zwitserse doopsgezinden, in 1833 trouwden ze. Van Harmen Jan zijn nog een gouden hanger en een zilveren naaldenhouder met zijn meesterteken bewaard.

Hun zoon Abraham (geb. 1834) zette na de vroege dood van zijn ouders de zaak aan de Kerkstraat voort, maar niet voor lang. Waarschijnlijk nam midden vorige eeuw de koopkracht in Aalten snel af zodat de klad kwam in het vak van edelsmid. Hij gaat in 1855 in Deventer in de leer als manufacturier. Abraham en zijn zus Annigje leden aan het besmettelijke favus (hoofdzeer), dat tot haaruitval leidde. Annigje droeg later pruiken. Toen ze overleden was wist de familie niet wat ze daarmee moest doen. Ten einde raad werden de pruiken in een doos gestopt en liet men ze door de Slingebeek wegdrijven. Van 1850 tot 1876 had Abraham met zijn zuster Annigje en vrouw Elisabeth Manschot een manufacturenzaak in het huis aan de Kerkstraat. Later kwam deze zaak door huwelijk van Annigje aan de familie Leerink.

Abraham had inmiddels in 1871 met zijn zwager Barend Johannes Manschot de hoornverwerkende industrie van Vaags in Aalten overgenomen, waar allerlei hoornen voorwerpen werden gemaakt, later vooral kammen.

Brandt en Zoon te Haarlem & Johannes Enschedé & Zonen, 1832, in leren band. Met bewerkt zilveren slot, gekeurd met het meesterteken van de zilversmid H.J. ten Dam (werkzaam in Aalten 1833-1850). Jaarletter niet zichtbaar afgeslagen, mogelijk aanwezig onder de montering. In de zilveren klamp aan de binnenkant staat gegraveerd: “C.E.E.” en het voorblad bevat de eigenaarsinscriptie: “Christina Elisabeth Ebbink 1843”. Afmetingen: 169 x 105 x 75 mm.
