De Ahof of De Pol is een verdwenen havezate en voormalig landgoed aan de rand van het dorp Aalten. In oude geschriften wordt het vermeld als ‘Hof ten Ahave’, wat later werd afgekort tot Ahof. De naam is afgeleid van het woord ‘aa’ (water), dus Hof aan het water.

De Ahof werd voor het eerst genoemd in een oorkonde uit 1281, horig aan de heerlijkheid Bredevoort. Later werd het in leen gegeven aan de Graaf van Lohn, die zetelde op het slot in Stadtlohn. Van het oorspronkelijke landgoed en havezate, boerderij en bijbehorende watermolen is weinig bewaard gebleven. Het is dan ook niet bekend hoe de oude havezate eruitzag.

De huidige monumentale herenboerderij ‘De Pol’ dateert uit 1743. Het is één van de oudste bouwwerken van Aalten en was lange tijd ook één van de voornaamste boerderijen. De naam ‘De Pol verwijst naar een verhoging in het landschap.

Gracht en watermolen

Aan het begin van de 20e eeuw schreef de Rotterdammer P. van de Weele een boekje over de havezathe. De oudste bewoonster die hij kon achterhalen was de weduwe Trijne van Ahave, die er in 1529 woonde. De naam van haar echtgenoot bleef echter onbekend.

Van der Weele schreef dat de gracht rond het gebouw nog niet zo lang daarvoor was gedempt. De gracht stond in verbinding met de Slingebeek. Aan de westkant van de havezathe stond een watermolen, die uit twee gebouwen bestond aan weerszijden van de beek. De molen diende zowel als koren- en oliemolen, maar raakte eind 19e eeuw in verval. In 1901 werden de molen en bijbehorende gebouwen door de gemeente gesloopt.

In de tijd dat Van der Weele het boekje over de havezathe schreef was Engelbartha Hendrika Arentzen de laatste van het geslacht dat lang op het huis heeft gewoond. Begin 20e eeuw kwam De Pol in bezit van de familie Prinsen, met Hente Prinsen als laatste bewoner.

Sociale functie

Burgemeester Bekius heeft zich ingezet om het gebouw in zijn oorspronkelijke staat te behouden. Door de eeuwen heen heeft De Pol een sociale functie vervuld. Eeuwen geleden was het een belangrijke ontmoetingsplaats omdat de voornaamste boer er woonde. In de Franse tijd was het een verzamelplaats voor verzetsactiviteiten en in 1906 het decor van de eerste voetbalwedstrijd in Aalten. In 1988 kreeg De Ahof een nieuwe bestemming als kinderboerderij.
