De ‘Stoomweverij Gebr. Driessen’ was een textielfabriek in Aalten, gevestigd aan de Dijkstraat, waar tegenwoordig de woonwijk Driessenshof is. Het bedrijf werd opgericht in 1826 en verhuisde in 1981 naar het Aaltense industrieterrein.

Omstreeks 1817 richtten de broers Anton en Joseph Driessen, afkomstig uit een invloedrijke textielfamilie, in Bocholt de firma Gebrüder Driessen op. Ze handelden voornamelijk in bombazijn, een weefsel van linnen en katoen, dat ze naar Nederland exporteerden. Deze lucratieve handel kwam in gevaar door de verhoging van de invoerheffing in Nederland op buitenlands weefsel.

Om de hoge tarieven te omzeilen vroegen ze de Nederlandse koning om toestemming voor het openen van een vestiging in Aalten. De vergunning werd verleend en in 1826 vertrok Anton naar Aalten, terwijl zijn broer de firma in Bocholt voortzette.

Thuiswevers en eerste spinnerij

Anton zette in Aalten een handspinnerij op voor zijn vele thuiswerkers, voornamelijk bombazijnwevers, die het aangeleverde garen verwerkten. Volgens een gemeentelijk verslag uit 1827 werkten toen al 218 wevers voor hem in en rond Aalten.

In hetzelfde jaar verplaatste Anton de katoenspinnerij naar een pand aan de Landstraat, dat hij had aangekocht van Manus Scholten. Deze locatie werd omgebouwd tot spinnerij met machines op zowel de begane grond als de verdieping. Ondanks bezwaren van buren wegens geluidsoverlast en brandgevaar, gaf het gemeentebestuur toestemming. Ook de gouverneur van Gelderland verwierp het protest.

Groeifase en mechanisatie

In de daaropvolgende jaren groeide de spinnerij uit tot een moderne stoomweverij. Anton richtte ook een blekerij op in Dale en liet aan de Dijkstraat een groot woonhuis met bijgebouwen neerzetten. De bombazijnhandel van Anton groeide in de loop der jaren uit tot een door stoom aangedreven spinnerij die hij later uitbreidde met mechanische weefgetouwen.

In 1893 stapte Anton’s zoon Herman uit de directie van het familiebedrijf en richtte samen met zijn zoon Joseph een eigen fabriek op aan de Hofstraat: de NV Stoomweverij Herman Driessen & Zoon.

Overnames en verhuizing

In 1918 verkocht Anton’s kleinzoon Theodoor het bedrijf aan Twentse investeerders die de fabriek voortzetten als ‘Voorheen Gebr. Driessen’.

In 1925 breidde de fabriek uit met een confectie-afdeling, van zes naar wel 110 meisjes in dienst. En in de crisisjaren (rond 1933) moderniseerde men grondig: het aantal weefgetouwen steeg van 34 naar 200.

In 1960 werd het bedrijf overgenomen door Wisselink’s Textielfabrieken, onderdeel van Textiel Groep Twenthe. Zij maakten onder meer technisch textiel, tent- en vlaggendoek.

Van fabriek naar woonwijk

Omdat het bedrijf veel geluids- en trillingsoverlast veroorzaakte, verhuisde de fabriek in 1981 naar een nieuw pand op bedrijventerrein ’t Broek. Zusterbedrijf Koala Tricotagefabriek verhuisde naar de Industriestraat.

Na de verhuizing werd het fabriekspand aan de Dijkstraat gesloopt om plaats te maken voor 120 woningen, de tegenwoordige woonwijk Driessenshof. Voordat de sloop begon, organiseerde de Vereniging tot Verbetering van de Volkshuisvesting (later opgegaan in De Woonplaats) in de lege fabriek een groots feest voor de Aaltense bevolking:
